Kavaratti: A beautiful Indian Island

“Kava” means over and “Ratti” means the night is never. The two words combined together means the night is never over. Kavaratti is an island and the capital of the union territory of Lakshadweep.

Located in the Arabian Sea, Lakshadweep, is the smallest union territory of India. The union territory consists of 12 islands, three coral reefs, and numerous islets. Eleven islands are inhabited by people. The total area of Lakshadweep is 32 square kilometers.

The main islands of Lakshadweep are Kavaratti, Agatti, Minicoy, and Amini. Kavaratti is the most developed among all the islands. It is situated between two islands Agatti and Andrott. Kavaratti is six kilometers in length and 1 kilometer in breadth.

The earlier history of the islands shows that a Muslim saint was washed up on the island of Amini in the 7th century. He converted the islanders to Muslims.

The climate of Kavaratti is mild. The highest temperature in summer is 35° centigrade and 32° during winter. The best time to visit the island is from November to April.

Tourism is the main business of Kavaratti. The blue water, warm sandy beaches are a great spot for sun bathing and water sports. The people of Kavaratti are also famous for their stone carving skill. The beautifully carved headstones in the graves look very  beautiful.

As it is mentioned, tourism is the major industry of Kavaratti.

  • Ujra Mosque: There are fifty two mosques in Kavaratti and the most beautiful of them all is the Ujra mosque. The ceiling of the mosque has been created from a driftwood. A well is situated near the mosque. The water of the well is considered holly and has the ability to cure.
  • Marin aquarium: A great place to visit who are interested about the underwater world.
  • Dolphin Drive Center: A great place for scuba diving.
  • Water Sports: Kayaking Canoeing and Snorkeling are available for tourists.
  • The lagoons are also an ideal place for sunbathing and relaxation.
