![]() Well, I cannot believe my eyes but I am happy. Maldives is one of the few countries in the world without having TV and radio stations in the private sector. Hopefully, this is going to be changed soon. Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union reported:
“Maldives, Information Minister Mohamed Nasheed has said that private parties will be able to acquire licences to start television and radio stations in the Maldives.
Haveeru Daily Online quoted the minister as saying rules and regulations for broadcasting and telecasting are now being finalised in time for the release of licences next month.
“The licence will be granted only if one follows the rules and regulations, and the law,” said Mr Nasheed.
When asked how the ministry would assign frequencies for broadcasts, Mr Nasheed said that there are many ways one could broadcast, and a different frequency for each broadcast is not necessary.”
It will ensure more freedom of speech in Maldives. On the other hand, for the common people, it will bring more news and more entertainment. I guess tourists will also be able to enjoy from the programs of private radio and TV. Already 38 applications have come for such license.
