Child marriage is banned in Nepal but that does not discourage many parents. I just read a sad report in Reuters- NEPAL: Child marriage still common in rural southwest. Well, you may call the villagers suppositious but the reality is that economic reality is the main reason behind child marriage in Nepal. Here are some of the factors that contribute behind child marriage.
1. In Nepal, parents of a girl are expected to pay dowry to the boy and his family. If the boy is a child too then the amount of dowry can become some less.
2. Almost all the parents think that their daughter is a burden. The earlier they arrange her marriage the better for them.
3. In rural areas, many people feel that girls must get marriage before reaching to puberty. So, there is a social pressure.
4. From rural areas, many young men migrate to the urban areas in search of a job. So, many parents are afraid that they might not be able to find a husband for their daughter when they grow older.
5. In the rural areas, girls do not have educational facilities and they cannot enter into any profession. So, getting married is the only thing for them and their parents often want to do it as soon as possible.
So, you can see that most of the reasons are directly or indirectly related to economic conditions.
