Sri Lanka is one of the South Asian countries whose economies depend on the remittance sent by their workers from abroad. Many Sri Lankan people work in the Middle East region and the remittance sent by these workers contributes a lot in the Sri Lankan economy. Both skilled and unskilled workers go abroad for job. Sri Lankan government has now decided to ensure that more skilled workers and less unskilled workers go abroad. Colombo Page reported:
“President Mahinda Rajapaksa has advised the Ministry to minimise the migration of unskilled labour and to maximise the skilled labour. Sri Lankan unskilled workers draw lower salaries and their migration has led to many social and other problems.
Mr. Saranapala said his Ministry had identified skilled employment opportunities in European and Middle Eastern countries. These jobs are in the technical, mechanical, marine and hospitality trades.”
I like this idea. It will ensure more remittance for Sri Lanka. There is another good side too. Unskilled workers often suffer fraud and abuse abroad. However, Sri Lankan government must ensure more training for the unskilled workers so that they can become skilled and go abroad. Continuous violence has destroyed the economy of the country and going abroad is the only hope for many people here.
