Sri Lankan government has taken a liberalized approach toward mobile phone industry in the recent years and it is making a positive impact in increasing the number of mobile phone users in the country. Sri Lanka is not a rich country and for many years it has been plagued with civil war. So, Sri Lanka is not an ideal place for mobile phone growth. However, according to a report of Lanka Business Online:
“Sri Lanka’s mobile phone penetration is due to peak at 38 percent in 2008, amidst regulatory bottlenecks to iron out crucial issues like interconnection and the management of frequency spectrum, an equity research report said Wednesday.
There are over 4.3 million mobile phone users in Sri Lanka for the six months to June, according to Central Bank figures, with growth averaging at about 50 percent.
Growth has been led by falling handset prices and attractive tariff packages, which have helped cellular phone penetration (mobile connections per 100 people), climb to 21.5 percent in June from 17.09 percent at the start of 2006, stockbroker, Capital Alliance Securities said.”
Mobile phone is a great blessing for the economy of any country. Sri Lanka is going to have higher mobile phone penetration than any other South Asian country in 2008. 38% penetration is good but Sri Lankan government should help the mobile phone operators so that this figure increases to 50% by 2008.
