The Data Theft Scandal: What is India Doing?
I hope that by now, you know about the Channel 4 documentary titled “The Data Theft Scandal”. This is surely the biggest blow to outsourcing industry of India. This documentary has already done a lot of damage (even before it is aired) to the image of India. Channel 4 is a respected and influential name in the media world and its documentary will influence a lot of people in UK.

Indian IT industry leaders are worried that this documentary may have negative impact on their industry. It seems that Indian IT leaders have made their mind to downplay the documentary as a conspiracy against Indian IT success. I am quoting from a report of IBN Live:
With the emerging consensus that India is being projected as being an unsafe destination for outsourcing work, NASSCOM chief Kiran Karnik has hinted at a larger conspiracy.
"Such stories go to prove the lengths to which some vested interests will go to threaten this global industry with its reputation for customer value and security," he said.
NASSCOM has also asked Channel 4 to provide it with details of the allegations it plans to air along with the evidence.
"Whilst there are a lot of unanswered questions, we take any allegation of a breach in our security extremely seriously. It is vital that Dispatches co-operates immediately so that the perpetrators of any breach can be brought to justice and lessons can be learnt. NASSCOM will reach out to the Indian police to investigate the claims made in the programme," Karnik said.”

So, you can see that Mr. Karnik is trying to prove that it is a conspiracy against India IT success and now some vested interests will take advantage from it. I respect Mr. Karnik a lot but I think that going on the offensive is not the right thing to do at this moment. Channel 4 is a highly respected name in the media world. It has investigated the matter for nearly one year too. So, trying to destroy the credibility of the documentary is not a good idea. On the other hand, HSBC suffered BPO fraud in India.

What Indian government and NASSCOM leaders should do is to identify the middle men who are engaged with these crimes of data theft. It is a reality that only a few persons are involved with this kind of crimes. India should identify these few bad guys who are destroying the image of the country.
