The Land of the Dawnlit Mountains: Itanagar

Situated in the north east corners of India, Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. The city occupies a land area of 110 sq kilometers. It is a flat hill area near the Himalayas at a height of 750 meters. Since 1974, Itanagar is serving as the capital of Arunachal Pradesh.  The city is divided into two parts.

Because of the ruins found in Itanagar, many historians believe that it is the site of the ancient capital of the 11th century Mayapur, ruled by the Jitari dynasty. A tribe called “Nishi” lives in this region. The Tibetan culture has a heavy influence over the people of Itanagar. People of many other states have been living here with the locals. Hence, Itanagar is often referred as “Mini India.”

Arunachal state has been opened to tourists since 1998. Itanagar’s natural beauty makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arunachal. The city is known as “The Land of the Dawnlit Mountains.” All through the year, climate remains mild and comfortable but the best time for the tourists is from October to April.

Some of the major tourist sites of Itanagar are:

  • Ita Fort: The name “Itanagar” derives from this fort. It is a fifteenth century fort (another website mentions fourteenth century).
  • Ganga Lake: Lying about 6 kilometers from Itanagar, also known as “Gyakar Sinyi,” this place is surrounded by forests. It is a great picnic destination.
  • Rajbhawan: The official residence of the governor.
  • Bomdila: Famous for its beautiful sceneries and mountain trekking.
  • Buddhist Temple: This yellow roofed temple has been declared a very sacred place by the famous spiritual leader Dalai Lama.
  • Hill Town and other major tourist spots: Situated by the side of the Tenga River, the hill town of Rupa, Tawang, Malinithan, Tezu are also very popular tourist spots. Itanagar Sanctuary, Polo Park, and a place named Tip, on the banks of the Kameng River, is worth a visit for their rich variety of trees and plants. These three are ideal spots for biologists.
Itanagar is well connected by road, air and rail. The airport is located in Lilabari Assam, and the rail station in north Lakhimpur. By road it is well connected to other major cities of north eastern India: Agartala, Aizawl, Kohima, Guwahati, Imphal, and Shillong.
