Situated in the north east corners of India, Itanagar is the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. The city occupies a land area of 110 sq kilometers. It is a flat hill area near the Himalayas at a height of 750 meters. Since 1974, Itanagar is serving as the capital of Arunachal Pradesh. The city is divided into two parts.
Because of the ruins found in Itanagar, many historians believe that it is the site of the ancient capital of the 11th century Mayapur, ruled by the Jitari dynasty. A tribe called “Nishi” lives in this region. The Tibetan culture has a heavy influence over the people of Itanagar. People of many other states have been living here with the locals. Hence, Itanagar is often referred as “Mini India.”
Arunachal state has been opened to tourists since 1998. Itanagar’s natural beauty makes it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arunachal. The city is known as “The Land of the Dawnlit Mountains.” All through the year, climate remains mild and comfortable but the best time for the tourists is from October to April.
