Bhutan is going to hold its first ever general election in 2008. After that election, the country will transform under a democratic rule from the present royal government. For any election, media is an important factor. However, Bhutanese media is mostly state owned and there are hardly any newspaper, radio or TV stations in the private sector. However, Bhutan is slowly opening its media sector. There are now two private newspapers in the country. FM Radio stations are coming too.
I feel that Bhutanese government should try to ensure the opening up of media to the private sector. Democratic election should be coincided with a vibrant media. However, I am happy for another matter. I can see that many Bhutanese now actively participates in Internet in blogging.
I am not sure if Bhutanese government has prepared a code of conduct before and during Election 2008. I believe that the government should take this matter very seriously.
