Galle is situated on southwestern part of Sri Lanka, 119 km from Colombo, beside a tea growing region. In ancient times, it served as a port city. The city was badly damaged by the 2004 Tsunami.
Galle took different names throughout the history; Gimhathiththa, Qali (mentioned in the travelogues of Ibn Batuta). In ancient times, it was the major port of Sri Lanka, known as ‘Trashish.’ Great King Solomon used to import ivory through this port. Cinnamon was also exported at that time. The seaport was known to all the major nations of the world including the Arabs, the Romans, the Greeks, the Malays and the Indians. In 16th century, the Portuguese came and occupied the city. Then the Dutch came and built a fort. The city lost its prominence during the British rule. They moved the port to Colombo. At present, Galle is the main city in the southern parts of Sri Lanka. Sinhalese are the majority of the population. Aside from the Sinhalese, there are Tamils, Moors, Burghers and Malays.
Many reputed educational institutions of the country are situated in Galle. Richmond College Vidayaloka College, Mahinda College, St.Aloysious College, Southlands College, Sacred Heart Convent, Sangamitta College, Rippon College etc. In addition, two major departments of Ruhuna University; engineering department and medicine department, are situated here.
Major export products of Galle include rubber, tea, rope, coconut oil, and coir.
Galle is also a very attractive place for the tourists. The fort, the sea beaches and various buildings are major tourist attractions of Galle.
- Fort: Built during the reign of the Dutch, this fort is now a world heritage site and one of the largest buildings in Asia built by the Europeans.
- St. Mary’s cathedral: Established by the Jesuit priests.
- Rumassala Kanda: A large hill. It acts as a barrier of the harbor.
- Sea beach: Tourists can swim and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings.
