After a long period of monarchy, Bhutan is going to have its first general election next year. In order to educate Bhutan’s general people, the two government owned radio stations of Bhutan is playing songs on election. The five songs composed in Dzongha, the local language of Bhutan, are aired from two radio stations: Bhutan Broadcasting Service and Kuzu FM. Under the royal decree, the Election commission is releasing various communication materials to inform the general people. In a statement, the Election commission of Bhutan said that the songs are aimed to motivate and inform the Bhutanese voters to come forward and participated in the electoral process with the highest sense of pride.
After ruling for a long time, former King of Bhutan Jigme Singhe Wangchuk abdicated power last year. Five years ago, Jigme Singhe Wangchuk handed over the power to ministers and empowered national assembly.
There are forty four thousand voters in Bhutan and 75% has been enlisted. To increase voters’ consciousness the election commission has also released a voter’s guide, which contains all the information about election, and a documentary film.
I must admit that Jigme Singhe Wangchuk is an exceptional king. There are not many kings, who, so easily hand over power to people. Normally, the whole process goes through a clash between the king and public. Jigme Singhe Wangchuk has done a very good job. Bhutan’s people for the first time will be having general election. I hope they chose honest and experienced representatives.
