In this blog, I write about the business opportunities in South Asian countries including Nepal. Well, today I am going to write about one of the most lucrative businesses in Nepal- poaching rhinos. Yes, it is illegal but very profitable and so profitable that poachers have become very successful in making the rhinos almost extinct. In 2000, there were around 600 rhinos in Nepal. Now, the number has not increased and in Chitwan National Park, there are now just 372 rhinos compared to 544 in 2000.
Indian rhinos live nearly 45 years. Female rhinos do not breed children every year. The poachers kill the rhinos mainly for the horns. Since, Nepal was plagued by civil war for the last few years; the government could not focus on protecting these animals. Now, peace has come in the country. I wish that all the parties would join force to protect the rhinos in Nepal. If the country loses this beautiful animal, it will be really a sad matter.
On the other hand, if you are a poacher then Nepal is perhaps the place for you. Well, I would not go there if I were you. The villagers have now become aware of protecting rhinos. Hopefully, the effort of ordinary people can make a difference for the Nepalese rhinos.
After rhinos, who is next in Nepal?
