Dengue has created havoc in several countries in South Asia including:
Dr. Muhammad Mukhtar, official, Malaria Control Directorate, in an interview with the Daily Times said that dengue would reappear on a regular basis for the next three years. I am quoting from the report:
A leading entomologist has warned of a cyclic re-appearance of Dengue fever for at least the next three years.
Dr Muhammad Mukhtar of the Directorate of Malaria Control told Daily Times on Tuesday that even though the number of cases had gone down because of winter, the epidemic could resurface later. Mukhtar, who has researched mosquitoes for 14 years, said important principles were ignored during the fumigation process which was done in the open, though the focus should have been in houses where the female mosquito lays eggs. “The Dengue mosquito is found inside homes, which were unfortunately not targeted during the fumigation drive,” he said. “Whatever exercise was carried out, it was not done on scientific lines.”
Pointing out the mistakes made during the fumigation to stop dengue, Mr. Mukhtar said that dengue is not a very serious disease. More than 90% people recover automatically except those who bleed from nose and mouth. He said that Directorate of Malaria would start a research from next month to find out whether chemicals used to kill malaria spreading mosquitoes works equally effectively for dengue spreading mosquitoes. He said that a national strategy to control the dengue virus has been formed and waiting for approval.
