The people’s revolution of
Nepal not only toppled the King but also tarnished his popularity. Previously, the King was worshipped like a god. Now, the Royal rulers and their tyranny are all a bad memory for
Nepal. The country is moving towards establishing democracy. Few days ago, the peace treaty signed between the Maoist rebels and government has brought new hope among people. Now, this newly established democratic government needs a new anthem. On Thursday, the government of
Nepal rejected the old national anthem of
Nepal that praised the King.
“From hundreds of flowers, we are one garland Nepali
Sovereign we are spread across Mechi Mahakali”
These are the two opening lines of Nepal’s new national anthem chosen by Nepal’s National Anthem Selection Taskforce. Last Thursday, the coordinator of the taskforce committee, Satya Mohan Joshi, submitted the song. It will get official recognition after the Council of Ministers allows it. Pradeep Gyawali, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, said that the writer of the song is an inhabitant of an indigenous remote area and this feature adds a charm to the song. He added that the new song has been chosen based on criterions like expressing the country’s natural beauty, geographic diversity, cultural and national identity and feeling the people.
The song was selected out of 1272 songs. Each of the songs was given a code. The composer’s name was not mentioned. Finally, this song was chosen by the committee. The tune of the song will be finalized after it is permitted by the council of Ministers. The writer of the song, Pradeep Kumar Rai, whose pen name is Byakul Maila, is a lawyer by profession. Writing is his part time work. Rai was born in Hilepani village of Okhadhunga district. He has Bachelor’s degree in Law and Master’s in Public Administration. Till now, he has written dozens of songs, poems, and haikus. He is the editor of Nepali Geet Sangraha and Barbhanjyang, a literary magazine in Nepal. Rai is also an active participant in the People’s movement of April.
Except few, the kings and monarchs in the history of human civilization were known for how they oppressed people and waste their money to make big palaces. Nepal’s 238 year old monarchy is also the same. The king and his followers took people’s money and spend it for their own luxury. It is natural that people would not like such a ruler. So far, the new government of Nepal has run the country smoothly. A landmark has been established after it signed peace treaty with Maoist rebels. Now, Nepal has a new government and new anthem. I hope that the new government would fulfill people’s expectations. Related articles:
