Last month, I wrote about Maldives ruining famous pop star Madonna’s vacation. I really felt bad that Maldives hotel owner charged more money from Madonna. However, it looks like things have taken a sudden turn. Maldives could be Madonna’s savior. Madonna and her husband, Guy Ritchie, are having a tough time. The once claiming “together for eternity” couple has reached at a boiling point. Things turned bad only two weeks ago before their sixth wedding anniversary. Madonna and Guy were taking a candle light dinner at Cecconi's, an exclusive Italian restaurant, in Mayfair London. The quiet romantic candle light dinner turned into a noisy quarrel. The diners were feeling uneasy as they could hear Guy’s loud voice. Madonna was very embarrassed at the whole thing. They even went to marriage therapist. Now, in a desperate effort to save her marriage, Madonna has planned a two week vacation in a quiet island of Maldives. Along with husband and wife their three children: Lourdes, Rocco, and David are going on the vacation. Astrologers are speculating that the couple would break within next seven months.
Now, I hope that the beautiful island, sandy beach and blue water would perform some miracle to save Madonna’s marriage.
On the other hand, I felt very sad after reading this news. It looks like a great tragedy is lying ahead of Maldivians just like the Nepalese people. The lion’s share of Maldives’ revenue earned through tourism is wasted in activities that are violating human rights. President, Abdul Gayoom has been in power since 1978. This once very popular President is not very popular among people now. However, he is not paying attention to people’s needs. Because of the increasing literacy rate people’s awareness has grown. Now they are asking for a new political system but Gayoom is not prepared to give up his power. So, he is using money to silence those who are opposing him. This is resulting into violation of human rights such as mass arrest, false charges etc.
Change is natural; the worst part is many people can not accept changes ;especially, those who are in politics. Maldives is a small country where tourism is the largest foreign currency earner. For a country that depends heavily on tourism, political instability would incur serious financial disaster. I hope, this whole issue ends up peacefully or else, intense political instability would ruin both the tourism industry and people’s lives as well.
