AIDS is a very dangerous disease and India has the highest number of AIDS patient. In order to raise awareness among people about AIDS,Richard Gere recently visited India. Yesterday, he appeared in a show in Mumbai, where more than 15,000 female sex workers gathered from surrounding areas. I am quoting from the report published in poconorecord.com
Richard Gere urged thousands of sex workers in Mumbai on Wednesday to insist their clients use condoms to help prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS.
"No condoms, no sex!" the 57-year-old actor shouted at an AIDS awareness event in Mumbai, the country's financial and entertainment hub. Gere urged the crowd of more than 15,000 sex workers from Mumbai and neighboring Thane district to repeat the chant after him.
Gere and Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu presented awards to those spearheading HIV prevention campaigns. The crowd's loudest cheers were reserved for Basu, who performed a song-and-dance number, "Atmavishwas Faith Within."
Richard Gere, the famous actor, who appeared in movies like Pretty Woman, An officer and a Gentleman has been famous for his humanitarian activities. Before this visit, he came to India last year to join another charity show. According to the report, India has 5.7 million AIDS affected people, which is the highest in the world. Four years ago, Gere started "Heroes Project” to spread awareness in India.
AIDS is a dangerous disease and the only cure against this disease in not medicine but awareness. AIDS is related to sex and Indian society does not talk openly about sex which makes it a serious problem. I am hopeful that this kind of program would help raise people’s awareness. Related articles:
