School text books in twelve languages: Nepal promotes education in mother tongue

It is said that education is the backbone of a nation and one’s mother tongue is the best medium for education. In reality, in a country not all people are fortunate to receive education in their mother tongue. Nepal is going to be an exception in this regard. The Curriculum Development Center of Nepal has developed books in twelve languages for students who want to study in their mother tongue. I am quoting from the report published in The Rising Nepal:

The Curriculum Development Centre has prepared school level textbooks in 12 different languages for students who want to study in their mother tongue and the schools that want to run classes in the mother languages.

Speaking at a discussion programme on 'Education in Mother Tongue' organised by the Education Journalists' Group here Friday, the participants complained about the lack of adequate teachers to teach in the mother tongues and the shortage of textbooks.

Acting Director of the CDC, Chitra Prasad Devkota said the Center was doing homework for promoting education in the mother tongue. He said that the Centre is going to publish textbooks in two more mother tongues.

There are 92 registered languages in Nepal. Amrit Yonzan, president, Language and Literature Council said that in many languages there are no teachers but large number of students and vice versa. He also blamed government and parents for not allowing their kids to acquire education in mother tongue. Another major problem is that many languages are oral languages. Due to lack of scripts, it is not possible to write textbooks into those languages.

The people of a country may use different languages but one language is given higher status and all kinds of institutions such as, government and private offices, educational institutions use that language. All kinds of business documents, letters, and literature are written in that language. A language is not just a collection of symbols and phonemes. It is also the bearer of a particular culture, lifestyle and history. In this regard, preservation and practice of language is very important. Nepal government has done a good job by promoting education in mother tongue. Other countries should also have these kinds of programs in order to preserve and maintain their linguistic and cultural diversity.
