In order to attract travelers and promote tourism, Sri Lankan government is planning to open a new international airlines. I am quoting from the report published in People’s Daily Online:
Sri Lanka will launch its second international airline to provide affordable services to travelers and promote regional tourism, a senior official said Thursday.
Anura Yapa, minister of Media and Information and the government spokesman told reporters that the government-owned budget airline "Mihin Air" will be launched shortly after the cabinet approved the proposal Wednesday.
"The government will provide the initial capital," Yapa said without disclosing the amount.
Yapa added that Mihin air was budget airways that would minimize the air travel cost upto 50%. This airline will aim the less affluent travelers. Last year, in the first quarter, Sri Lanka saw a significant increase in the number of tourists. The government of Sri Lanka is aiming to increase the number of tourists to one million by 2010.
Sri Lanka may be a small island but it has many things to offer to the tourists of the world. As a tourist destination, the country has many attractions. If you are a lover of nature then you can find fifteen beautiful national parks, and more than one hundred water falls. Sri Lanka’s forest is very rich in terms of flora and fauna. Another major attraction of Sri Lanka is its beautiful sunny beaches. Sri Lanka also has many famous historical sites like Kandy, the religious capital and the most beautiful city, Anuradhapura, the ancient city of Sri Lanka and many more. The ongoing war between government army and LTTE is a major obstacle for Sri Lankan tourism. Let us hope and pray that the war ends as soon as possible.
