Amitabh Bachchan: Against All the Odds (II)

Aside from sustaining injuries, and poor health conditions, Amitabh Bachchan had his shares of misfortunes and failures.

The 90’s downward popularity:

For two decades, Amitabh Bachchan ruled Bollywood like a king. The 70’s and the 80’s were the best times of his career. During those days, only his name was enough to make people go to theatres and watch movies. In those days, his Angry Young Man (AYM) movies did phenomenal business. However, the popularity of AYM movies started to decline in the nineties. Still, Hum which was made in 1991, did good business. One of the movie songs, Jumma Chumma De De, was a big success.

Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL):

In 1997, Amitabh Bachchan founded Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL),a film production company. The main thing about this company was that for the first time some one tried to involve normal people to invest in films. The intention was noble, time was right and Amitabh Bachchan was the biggest name in Bollywood. Hence, many people invested in the company. Under ABCL, Major Saab, Mrityudaata, and Shastra were released where Amitabh Bachchan played the lead role. However, because of poor management the company went bankrupt. The surprising thing was Amitabh did not file for bankruptcy rather, he cleared his debts from the money he earned from his acting. By 2005, he cleared all his debts.

Political career:

In 1984, Amitabh also entered into politics. He had very good relation with the Gandhis especially, with late Rajiv Gandhi. He contested from his home town Allahabad and was elected as a member of parliament. Unfortunately, he had to renounce his position after three years because of Bofors Scandal. It was a major scandal where names of Rajiv Gandhi and Amitabh Bachchan came up. It was a big blow not only for Amitabh Bachchan but also for the then ruling Indian National Congress. Although Amitabh’s name was cleared, he later admitted that his joining politics was an emotional decision. He should not have done it.

Life is not a smooth journey. There are ups and downs in every man’s life. All the top players do not do well in all their games, all business men do not constantly make profits and all actors do not make successful movies all the time. Amitabh Bachchan was no exception but the best thing about him is that he did not run away from his problems. He stood up and faced them bravely. This is why Amitabh Bachchan is the “BIG B,” a person larger than life.
