Amitabh Bachchan in an interview with IBN’s entertainment editor, Rajeev Masand talked about Nishabd. According to him, people and media are not asking the right questions about the movie. It is true that the movie is on a very tricky subject but director Ram Gopal Varma had a very clear vision of what he wanted to do with the movie. India is a country where people are very traditional and the leading actor of the movie and the director have handled the subject accordingly. Amitabh Bachchan also assured Rajeev that the movie is definitely not about sexual relation rather it reveals the psychology of the two people involved in an unaccepted relationship. I am quoting from IBN Live:

Rajeev Masand: All eyes are on your new film Nishabd which is about a complicated relationship between a 60-year-old man and an 18-year-old girl. Did you have to be extra careful in making sure that the act doesn’t tip over because it is just the kind of character that could easily become a dirty old man or a pervert.

Amitabh Bachchan: I am glad that you asked this as your very first question because we have been desperate to get the right kind of questioning in this film from the audience and the media. It is a tricky subject, more so for an audience, which is very traditional and conservative in most parts of India. But we are obviously looking at making films on topics and emotions, which are different and have never been put across. So, the onus falls on us to get it right and we do not cross the boundary so to say. And as you rightly put it, the topic is a little sensitive.

But one of the few initial things that Ram Gopal Varma and me discussed was that it’s bold thing to do. It’s even surprising that a subject like this is coming out of Ram Gopal Varma’s Factory. But we were very sure about how far we wanted to go. This was not going to be something that was going to be physical, sexual or sensuous in any manner.

Rajeev Masand: And that is why it is not Lolita.

Amitabh Bachchan: No, obviously not. What it really is that there is this situation that has happened. But now what? It is more than why it happened and the film goes into the whole history of the fact that she is 18 and he is 60. It is how the family, the person and the young girl become a part of this concept. How they react and what really happens in a situation like this. That is what the film is all about.

Because of his old age, Amitabh Bachchan does not get that many versatile roles but he has given some of his best performance in movies like Khaki, Black, Sarkar, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Eklavya: The Royal Guard and finally he pushed the limit in Nishabd. Set to be released on 2^nd March, the trailer of the movie has created huge controversy. Many people are not happy that at this age Amitabh Bachchan has done such a movie. However, in all the interviews Amitabh Bachchan has cleared what the movie is really about. Now, the people have to wait and see what Nishabd is really all about.
