Doing Business in Bangladesh: Sweets and more Sweets

To be honest with you, I am a big fan of Bangladeshi sweets and today while searching about Bangladeshi sweets in Internet I could hardly find any useful information about it. I searched with the keywords Bangladesh sweets and Bangladeshi sweets and I could find hardly anything except some recipes or offers to send gifts. Bangladeshi sweet is surely a lot more than that.

Even from business point of view, it is a big industry in terms of generating employment. In every corner of Bangladesh you can find sweet shops. In Dhaka, you can find sweet shops after every 200-300 meter distance. In fact, within 2 kilometer radius of my home in Dhaka, there are more than 10 sweet shops. This industry also generates a lot of employment. Government earns a lot of revenue through VAT from the sweet shops.

I love to divide Bangladeshi sweets in three broad categories:

1. Traditional sweets made from cheese

2. Traditional cakes mainly made from rice powder, milk and molasses/sugar.

3. Others

Life without sweet is unimaginable in Bangladesh. Western sweets like chocolate and pastry are not popular among most people in the country.

Sweet is an integral part of doing business in Bangladesh. If you go to visit any company, it is always a nice idea to take some sweets for the person you are going to visit. If you want to give any good news to anyone here, you are expected to break the news along with a packet of traditional sweet.
