How tea made its way to India?

The Dutch introduced tea to Europe in 17^th century. However, it became very popular in England. It started to import black tea from China. England was looking for alternatives and then India entered into tea production. Growers started to experiment with tea plants and seeds brought from China to grow in India. In 1835, local tea plants were discovered in Assam by the East India Company. Since then, tea production expanded rapidly in this subcontinent.

In 1838, the first Indian tea harvest was auctioned in London which was warmly greeted by the tea growers and tea businessmen.

The first tea plantation in India was established in Assam. In 1856, tea plantation started in Darjeeling and flourished quickly. Today, Darjeeling produces the best quality Indian black tea.
