I have found a report published by ICRA about Indian tea industry in 2006. I am providing some of the major points of the report:

Last year, India exported tea worth Rs. 17.31 billion which accounts for .4% of the country’s export. It is the fourth largest agricultural item of the country.

Production of tea has increased from 1,070 kgs in 1961 to 1584 kgs in 2005 but declined in the recent year due to the old age of tea bushes, extensive use of chemical fertilizers, drought, and heavy rainfall. The good thing is still the country has produced more tea compared to China, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. 

India is the largest tea consuming country in the world and it has increased in recent years. Annual tea consumption per capita has increased from 0.61 kg in 1991 to 0.64 kg in 1998 and 0.69kg in 2005.

As people income grows they go for other types of beverages. Along with tea, another popular beverage in India is coffee. India consumed 75million kgs of coffee in 2005.
