The captain of 1983’s World Cup winning Indian team, Kapil Dev, recently said that giving the vice-captaincy of the Indian cricket team to Sachin Tendulkar for the World Cup Cricket 2007 was not a good decision. Rather, he thinks the job of vice captaincy should have been given to someone younger in the team so that he can gradually cope up to such job and can become fit for captaincy in future. .
Central Chronicle reported:
"I feel the vice-captain should have been someone young, so that we could have groomed him for captaincy. Till the time Rahul Dravid is playing, he should remain the captain," Kapil said.
He also said it was rather strange that Tendulkar accepted the offer.
"Sachin has never shown any interest in becoming the captain of the team again. He has never said anything publicly about his desire to become captain again," Kapil was quoted as saying in a press release issued by TV channel 'Aaj Tak'.
"If he wants to take up the job, he should say it openly and not merely talk to selectors. And it would be an insult to Sachin if the selectors made him the vice-captain and then decide to make someone else as captain,""In fact, if Sourav Ganguly could fit into the side, he would have been a better deputy,"
