To the outside world, Nepal is known as a mountains country. Out of the top ten highest mountain peaks in the world, 7 are situated in Nepal and many tourists come to climb these mountains. However, Nepal has flat areas in Terai region and at least 30% of the Nepalese population live in this area. These people are neglected in the country and are heavily underrepresented in the parliament and government jobs. In the last few days, we saw violent demonstration and strike in this region and it was hurting the economy of this region as well as that of Nepal.

The good news is that Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has promised to solve some of the problems of the people of Terai region. He has asked for dialoge. The leaders of the Terai plain have welcomed this move by the government and called off the strike.

At least 27 people have died in clashes between protesters of the Madheshi people and security forces.

Calm returned after the head of a leading Madheshi group welcomed the prime minister's call for a dialogue and suspended its protests.

Madheshi groups say they have been discriminated against in the existing state structure.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has vowed to amend the constitution to meet the key demands of Madheshi protesters.

He has pledged a federal system of governance and more representation of the southern plains in the parliament.

27 lives have been lost so far. Let us hope that there would be no more blood shed in this region. The sad part of history is that no one learns from it. Nepal witnessed pro democracy movement last year and the King bowed down only after the death of many people. Now, Nepal has a democratic government. So, it is tragic that 27 people had to die to get something form a democratic government.
