Nilgiri is situated in Southern India. This region is the major tea producing area in Southern India. Earlier, majority of the tea produced here were exported to USSR.

Compared to the tea of Darjeeling and Assam, Nilgiri tea has better fragrance. The main reason behind this is that it is grown at a high altitude among eucalyptus, blue gum, and cypress plants.

The hills of the Nilgiri district in Tamil Nadu are the main center of tea production but there are other plantations in the state of Kerala.

The tea here is produced by Crush Tear Curl (CTC) process. The best quality tea is out of local people’s reach. The lower quality tea is used for domestic consumption.

In November 2006, in the first tea auction in Las Vegas, Nilgiri tea was sold at $600 per kg.
