In order to ensure better quality tea several research institutes have been set up in different states around India. Tea research is the oldest agricultural research in India. Here are some of the tea research centers:

Tocklai Experimental Station: This research center started in 1911. Situated in Jorhat, North Eastern India, Tocklai Experimental Station is the oldest and the largest Tea research center. It has a sub station in Nagrakata. The center is connected to other research centers in that region including South bank, North bank, Upper Assam, Cachar, Do oars, Darjeeling and Terai.

In 1926, United Planters' Association of Southern India started its scientific department at Devarashola.

Tea Research Institute of Cinchona started in 1961 by the United Planters' Association of Southern India.

Darjeeling Tea Research Center was established in 1976 by India Tea board.
