Another two tragic death incidents of Indian cricket fans

Earlier, I have written about a seventeen year old boy’s death from heart attack due to the Indian cricket team’s defeat to Bangladesh. After India’s defeat against Sri Lanka, two tragic death incidents have taken place. This time a married couple and twenty eight old lost their lives for India’s defeat to Sri Lanka.

Twenty five year old farmer, Mahadeb Sarkar and his wife, Sadhana Sarkar hung themselves in separate rooms in their house. Fortunately, Sadhana’s rope snapped and she fell down. Later, the neighbors came in. On the other hand, twenty eight year old Raju, a resident of Hyderabad was found lying unconscious in his room in front of the television. I am quoting from the report published in Scotsman.com:

Upset over India's loss and after having an argument with his wife, 25-year-old farmer Mahadeb Sarkar hung himself after the match in the village of Bajitpur in eastern state of West Bengal.

His wife, Sadhana, who was also upset about the defeat, tried to hang herself in another room, but she survived.

"While Mahadeb died instantly, the rope snapped in the other room and Sadhana fell in a heap, alarming her neighbours," said local police officer Kuntal Chatterjee.

The couple had an argument because Sarkar had gone ahead with plans to watch the match at a friend's house, while his wife had wanted him to stay home so they could watch the match together. In addition, they were upset over the defeat, police said.

Winners in 1983 and finalists in the last tournament, India suffered a 69-run defeat in their crunch Group B match against Sri Lanka and their slim hopes of progressing now hinge on an unlikely defeat for Bangladesh by debutants Bermuda on Sunday.

In another incident, a 28-year-old man had a heart attack after watching the match at his home in a suburb of Hyderabad, the state capital of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Fans are very much upset all over India after the team was defeated by Sri Lanka. Things have become so serious that government is expecting attack on the cricketers.

Cricket may be very popular in India but the way people are reacting is abnormal.  They should not take the game so seriously. Some people are blaming the media for this. They created a  hoopla out of nothing and now people's lives are at stake.

It scares me to think that what used to be an entertaining GAME, has now become a matter of life and death situation. Very sad indeed that it has been taken to such an extreme that lives are cut short over it. A reality check is definitely in order here.
