Aishwarya Rai or Aishwarya Bachchan

I am sad and shocked that Aishwarya Rai has decided to take the surname of her husband and will be called from now Aishwarya Bachchan. Of course, there is nothing wrong in it and millions of women across the world take the surname of their husbands after marriage.

The Hindu reported:

Aishwarya Rai, Bollywood's hottest bride, will take her new husband's famous name to become Aishwarya Bachchan, said her father-in-law, Indian superstar actor Amitabh Bachchan.

Rai, who married Abhishek Bachchan last weekend in a gala affair dubbed ``the wedding of the century,'' has already signed an autograph as Aishwarya Bachchan, the family patriarch told in an interview to a daily published on Thursday.

``She desires to use Bachchan as her surname,'' he said.

Aishwarya Rai should have gone for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and this way she could keep her identity intact. Anyway, she is just an actress and she has her own likes and dislikes. If she has decided to keep name intact and not taken the surname of her husband, many women in India would feel encouraged.

What's there to be sad about and what encouragement would her keeping her surname have given to other women?

She is more liberated than any of the agony aunts in the media. If she has CHOSEN to follow a harmless tradition instead of entering a traditional family making political statements at the outset, it just shows that she is a thinking woman and not one to follow the trends of tokenism.

I personally don't think that there is anything wrong in changing here last name, I don't see anything for you people out there to be sad about, its her life and her decision.. I am one of her biggest fan, I wish her all the best and a very happy life with her husband.. Aishwarya be proud girlfriend, cause if it was me I would of done the same thing.... Its My Right!!!!! BE PROUD AISHWARYA!!!

Yup. SHe should have opted for aishwarya rai bachchan. But she wan't to impress the Big B by not doing it? I guess so.

i think wad she has done is her choice... and i wud also do that.. as im gona get married in a yr or 2
i am gona take my husband's surname..its a matter of PRIDE for me...
and i think for her too...
and good she has kept to her tradition..
this mite prove her whole heartedness for the family...
this also proves her sincerity and morality towards her family who blivs in keepin traditions..
hatz off ... women its our culture..
dun let the western culture afect u so much..
surname for ur husband is a pride... and if ur genuine to ur husband and really love him... u shud b proud to have his family name... joined to ur name...
coz this is ur family now..
hats off for aishwarya rai...who still hasnt let the western culture completely rule over her!
luck!

Taking your husband's name is not a matter of pride. I don't understand why it should be. It's a tradition created by men to satisfy their ego. I bet there's not one man out there who would be proud to take his wife's last name. And it's plain wrong and unfair to expect of people to do for you what you wouldn't do for them.

I agree with you Razib. As sad as it is, it's very true that women in India look up to celebrities and make their life decisions based on what celebrities decide to do with their lives. Aishwarya's decision to not change her last name would have inspired a lot of women but she has to impress her in-laws coz everything is so new. I bet the whole wanting to live with the in-laws thing won't last very long either. She's just in a show off phase right now.

I am glad that ash u have decided to use the name ashwirya bachacn and not ashwirya rai.this shows that u have got married.I am the kind of person that is your biggest fan.

may they stay 1 4 eva

may they stay 1 4 eva

I am soo happy that Aishwaria gor married to Abhishek Bachchan because he is my faviorite actor.....
May they stay together forever and ever

hi aish i am your biggest fann you are the best!!!!!!!!!and the cuuuuuuuuutest!!!!!!!! lots of love and wishes from -
srishti sethi may you and abhishek live happily ever after!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whether a woman changes her last name after marraige or not is completely her call!.....why should Aishwarya be guilted over her choice???.......If people in India are making life decisions based on celebrities, the joke is on them!....I don't think Aishwarya, or any woman for that matter, needs to worry about setting a "role-model" for anyone!......I'm sure they have plenty to worry about, without this added burden.

hi, i agree with a post above that taking husband's name has nothing to do with love and pride! why do u need to change yr entire identity after marriage, wud yr hsband do that for u for all the love he has for u? i got married to one of my closest friends and for all my love for him, i havent changed my name. It makes me proud to retain my identity. I feel Ash shd have done that. being a celebrity in her own right she did not need the crutch of the bachchan surname.

Also i feel children should their mother's name in their names since she takes all the pain in bringing them to the world. Like Angelina's kids are Maddox-Jolie-Pitt and Sanjay Bhansali writes his name as Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

well... I just feel she's smart and just has used her head to take this decision. "Bachhan" is a very saleable brand in Indian Cinema and to some extent a famous name internationally too. She's just adding another feather to her already overloaded hat.May be she wants to go down the history with this name. Smart girl :-)

it's a womans choice on whether or not she wants to change her surname. i personally choose to keep my dad's name despite my husband saying that he wants me to use his family name. I have nothing against my husbands family name. It's just a simple fact that I like my name, I identify with my name and I've lived with it all my life before marriage. I don't see why I have to change it. So I stuck with it. I feel proud to stand up for what I believe in than to live with a name that was just not me.

we can not say what she had to be doing or what she had not, coz we don have the right to say anything about any once decission. its her life, let her live her life on her own ways.
she knows wat she has done even her in laws are not against it then why u ppls are in so much pain.
aish i like u so much and u deserve all this, as salman and vivek werent the right person for u allah has given u a very nice husband abhishek who loves u alot and karishma took the wrong decisson by leaving a person like abhishek.
anyways we say allah knows better.
i could only saY forget the past, just concentrate in ur life.
aish i can not wait to hear ur good news that ur pregnant, but plz keep ur figure like the way it is.
ur very beautiful woman and always be!!!
allah always showers his blessings upon u and ur family, may he fulfill all ur wishes and keep u happy all ur entire life with ur lovely family. . .

ash should show abhisek ur body. he loves girls like u. i think u should be sexy to ur husband. have sex and u can have a baby girl just like u ash.
