Miss Universe 2007 Without Miss Sweden but With Controversy

Miss Universe 2007 beauty contest will be held on May 28, 2007 in Mexico City, Mexico. However, the competition has already created some criticism and is facing protest from different countries. For instance, Isabel Lestapier Winqvis, winner of the Miss Sweden 2007, has already left the competition as Swedes think that Miss Universe is decreasing the women’s image.

Moreover, another controversy is over the swimsuit section of the competition that requires participants showing their body wearing less clothe. I am quoting some lines from China Daily regarding some other controversies over the Miss Universe competition:

"We're taking a big beating by being linked to it," said Panos Papadopoulos, the organizer of the Miss Sweden contest, which scrapped its swimsuit competition and allowed women to apply for the position like any other job after heavy criticism from feminists.

Miss Tanzania, Flaviana Matata, an electrical technician whose country is participating for the first time, is also challenging stereotypes of beauty with her shaved head. "I never let anyone define me neither by hair nor clothing as I believe God made me perfect as a pure, natural African woman," she said.

Miss Universe has a worldwide popularity in the world and many people enjoy the competition. This kind of competition does not mean decreasing of women’s image. However, there should not have anything that can mislead people from the main objective of the competition. There should be a strong regulatory body internationally that would review each of the sections of the competition to find out if there is anything obscene in Miss Universe competition.
