For the time being, Spider-Man 3 may be facing a hard time in USA but it is rocking Asia. On May 1st, the movie opened up in sixteen countries in Europe and Asia and collected an impressive $ 29.5 million breaking records of collection of previous spiderman movies in ten countries. In Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan, Spider-Man 3 did great business.
Variety.com reports:
"Spider-Man 3," meantime, scored the biggest opening day ever in 10 out of the 16 markets in which it launched May 1, and was easily outpacing the first two pics so far. In its first day of release, Sony's "Spider" sequel raked in $29.2 million. (First two "Spider" pics combined crawled to $26.2 million in those markets on their opening days.)
In its opening day Tuesday, Sony estimated that the pic hit ¥415 million ($3.47 million) in Japan, beating "Spider-Man 2's" ¥410 million. The first "Spider" took in ¥347 million in its first day in Japan in 2004.
In Korea, the latest pic also beat out one-day marks for its predecessors, taking in 3.2 billion won ($3.44 million), Sony honcho Jeff Blake said.
In Hong Kong, Spidey saw the biggest opening day of all time, with $HK7.5 million ($958,984), besting previous record holder "Kung Fu Hustle."
Pic also drew the biggest opening day of any film in Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. In Taiwan, it saw the biggest weekday opening ever.
Key openings follow Thursday in territories including China and Russia.
The impressive performance of the film in overseas has been a major relief for Sony pictures and Columbia studio. According to Jeff Blake, vice Chairman, Sony spiderman is a worldwide franchise and he was very happy that the movie made great starts in two different parts of the world.
Although Blake is very optimistic about the movies business in USA, it would be very tough as five other third installations of five successful movies will be released this summer: Shrek the Third, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Ocean's 13, Bourne Ultimatum and Rush Hour 3.
