Sales for the film, shown in a record 4,252 theaters, topped the $135.6 million earned by Walt Disney Co.’s “Pirates of the
“Spider-Man 3,” the most expensive film released this year, had little competition. The only other debut was “Lucky You,” a comedy from Time Warner Inc. starring Drew Barrymore, which finished sixth with $2.5 million. The film vaulted Sony into the box-office lead among studios for the year.
“This is the biggest lopsided victory in movie history,” said Gitesh Pandya, publisher of BoxOfficeGuru.com, in an interview, referring to the gap between “Spider-Man 3” and second place’s “Disturbia.” He said he expects the movie’s gross will drop by half next weekend.
Spider-Man 3 has the largest single day sales in IMAX theatres around the world. The amount is estimated to be $2.2 million with $57,147 per theatre on an average on the opening weekend. The movie has opened in 118 IMAX theatres around the world making it the largest movie opening in the company’s history. IMAX is estimating that Spider-Man 3 would earn $6.3 million worldwide. According to Sony Pictures, Domestic Distribution President, Rory Bruer, the IMAX release offers fans of Spider-Man another unique and exciting way to experience the film.
Well, IMAX or not IMAX, fans all over the world are really enjoying the movie. Now, the million dollar question rises: Will there be a Spider-Man 4?
