Movie Review of Jhoom Barbar Jhoom: Neither excellent nor good nor below average

After creating all the hypes and HOOPLAS, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom has been released yesterday in theatres around India. So what is the reaction of the viewers? After going through several movie reviews? I am presenting before you some of the major features of the movie after going through the reviews published in various websites.

Preity and Lara Jhoom Barabar Jhoom

Good features of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom:

  • As expected, the movie has been very glamorous. Designer Aki Narula did a great job. From the 30’s vintage look to the latest fashion, he had not left any stone unturned. His designs added an extra specialty to the movie.
  • The movie is a total PAISA VASOOL type. If you are looking for a movie with good story and strong characters then it is the not the movie but if you are planning to spend a quality time with your girl friend, then it is the right kind of movie.
  • Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s music has proved once again. The title song “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” with Amitabh Bachchan performing in a gypsy outfit has become very popular.
  • Vaibhavi Merchant, the choreographer has given steps that properly suits the music and upholds the spirit of the movie. The spectacular dance sequence with lots of sexy looking white female dancers and spectacular sceneries make Jhoom Barabar Jhoom a total entertainer.  Truly, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom will make you JHOOM.
  • Shot in Paris, London and India, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom tells the story of four NRI boys and girls. I can bet that you liked Abhishek and Lara dancing in front of Eiffel Tower in Paris in the movie promo. All the songs have been shot in foreign locations which makes Jhoom Barabar Jhoom a real EYE CANDY.
  • The film is a romantic comedy with some odd characters coming close to each other. You would really enjoy the way the way they communicate with each other; lots of comic relief.
  • What the film lacks in plot, story, and characters makes up with its picturization, glamour, and music and dance sequence. Ayanaka Bose, the cinematographer, has done a very good job.
  • Habib Faisal’s dialogue is a major strong point of the film. It reveals the true nature of the characters. Rikki, a con man pretending to be a sophisticated person with good taste; Alvira, an England born Pakistani girl, good looking and a bit arrogant and dreamy; Anaida Raza, totally the opposite of Alvira, a sharp and intelligent woman; and Steve Singh; a rich Londoner. All these characters have been truly represented with their dialogues in the film.

Bad features:
Till now, I have talked about the good things about the movie. Now, let’s talk about the bad things.

  • The movie has no story to tell. If you are expecting something like Bunty aur Bubli of 2005, then forget about it. You will be totally devastated. Bunty aur Bubli had a great story but this movie is nothing compared to the previous one.
  • The absence of a good story makes Jhoom Barabar Jhoom very boring from time to time. The movie can be divided into two parts. In the first part, Rikki and Alvira meet at London station and in the second part, these two characters deal with their weakness for each other. There is nothing very special except the glamorous dance sequence, trendy outfits and songs and the foreign locations.
  • Amitabh Bachchan plays the character of sutradhar, who narrates the story of the movie. Clad in a gypsy dress and a feather hat, he pops up here and there and tells the story. Many believe that his character has a lot of potential but it has not been properly treated.
  • All the characters have no connection to real life. Moreover, their dresses and the surrounding have made them more artificial. They do not invoke any excitement among the viewers.
  • The movie even contains racist remarks.
  • Many critics referred Jhoom Barabar Jhoom to be a musical like Jaaneman of 2006. With no good story and no good acting the movie is just a “fruit cake” with no fruits.
  • Although Habib Faisal has created dialogues according to the nature of the characters, many complained that the there are lots of unnecessary dialogues which make it very boring. Most of the critics complained about the first part of the movie where Rikki and Alvira describe how they met their fiancés. The dialogue is long, and artificial.
  • Over all, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom did not score high. Most of the reviews, rated it not more than two; neither excellent nor good but not below average. In Bollywood, there are many movies that do not have good stories or great characters but somehow because of their overall presentation they pull viewers to theatres. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is such a typical “Masala” movie. In many places the movie did good business on its opening day but that success can be contributed to the overall marketing strategy of Yash Raj Films. The glamorous promos, teasers, trailers and the music have created a great enthusiasm among the viewers but once they see the movie they would not think of seeing it again.
