Rani Mukherjee: The Bollywood Queen (2)
2003:

In 2003, Rani worked with Shah Rukh Khan in Chalte Chalte. Till then, in all the movies with Shahrukh Khan, Rani used to do supporting characters. Chalte Chalte was the first movie where Rani got a major role against Shah Rukh. The movie was a hit and Rani Mukherjee came up in a different appearance and people liked her.

2004-2006:

Abhishek Bachchan Rani Mukherjee Yuva

These three years were a crucial period in Rani Mukherjee’s career. All the major movies that established Rani Mukherjee came out at this time. In 2004, she worked with Abhishek Bachchan in Yuva. She played the role of an average Indian middle class girl, Sashi Biswas, who leaves her family for the sake of her love. Yuva was a major commercial success and not only it propelled Rani Mukherjee’s career but also revealed the acting potential of Abhishek Bachchan. That year, Rani and Abhishek won the Film Fare Best Supporting Actor and Actress award.

Rani Mukherjee Saif Ali Khan Hum Tum

Another hit movie of 2004 was Hum Tum. Directed by Kunal Kohli, Hum Tum was a romantic comedy which was based on the English movie When Harry met Sally. Beautiful foreign locations, great songs, and Rani Mukherjee and Saif Ali’s portrayal of a beautiful love hate relationship just made Hum Tum one of the most successful movies of 2004.

Rani Mukherjee Amitabh Bachchan Black

In 2005, Rani Mukherjee appeared in four movies and three of them made huge impact on the box office. Black is the story of Michelle McNally, a girl who is deaf and dumb since birth. Rani Mukherjee beautifully portrayed Michelle’s character. Black is one of the best Indian movies ever produced. That year Time Magazine included Black in its list of Ten Best movies of the year around the world. Black was followed by Bunty aur Bubli, another successful commercial film. The item song of the film “Kajra Ra” was the best item song of the year. Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan and Amitabh Bachchan performed in the song.

Mangal Pandey The Rising

Then came Mangal Pandey: The Rising. Based on the story of Sepoy Mutiny in India, the film created huge enthusiasm among film goers but could not become successful like Amir Khan’s previous movie Lagaan. Rani’s character in this movie does not have a major presence but she received positive reviews.

In 2006, Rani Mukherjee was paired up with Shah Rukh in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Rani played Maya Talwar, who was not happy with her married life. Then Dev Saran (Shah Rukh Khan) came into her life and the two became close. Dev was also married and had a son. The movie raises question whether people are truly happy in their marriage. Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna created controversy because it challenged the Indian tradition. In Hinduism, marriage is a very sacred relationship between a man and a woman. The film did very good business in UK and USA.

Present:

This year, only one movie of Rani Mukherjee has been released; Ta Ra Rum Pum. In this movie for the first time, Rani Mukherjee has played the character of a mother. This is her second appearance with Saif Ali Khan after Hum Tum.

Upcoming movies:

Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who also directed Black in 2005.
