Although the movie did not do good business but it was praised by the critics. Earlier, Ravi Chopra wanted Manish Malhotra to design rani mukherji’s clothes for this movie but Rani did not like it and hired designer Sabyasachi Mukherji.

Black, released in 2005, is the story of a girl who is deaf and dumb from birth. This movie truly established rani mukarji as a talented actress in Bollywood. Rani plays the character of “Michelle McNally.” In the beginning Rani was not ready to accept the role but director Sanjay Leela Bhansali convinced her. For the character she had to wear dark contact lenses. She even took six month’s training in Mumbai’s Hellen Keller Institute. Finally, when the movie released it was highly praised by the film critics and for her performance she received Film Fare Best Actress Award in 2005.

Saathiya (2002) is a love story between a middle class boy and a girl. Rani plays the character of Dr. Suhani Sharma. In this movie, Tanuja played the character of Rani Mukherjee’s mother. In real life, Tanuja is actually Kajol’s mother.   

In Chalte Chalte (2003), Rani Mukherjee was paired up with Shah Rukh Khan. Her new look and style in the movie was widely appreciated. For the role of “Priya Chopra” Shah Rukh Khan’s first choice was Rani Mukherjee but she could not do it for lack of time. Later, Aishwarya Rai was hired but because of her tumultuous relation with Salman Khan she dropped out. Rumor has it that, Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai's ex-boy friend stormed into the set and behaved badly with Aishwarya Rai. He even threatened Shah Rukh Khan. Later, Rani walked in and did the part. After this incident, the friendship of two great khans ended.

This year, one film of Rani Mukherjee has been released; Ta Ra Rum Pum (2007). In this movie, Rani Mukherjee appeared in short skirt on the big screen. She also played the role of a mother for the first time. The movie may not have done very well but every body praised Rani Mukherjee’s slim figure. As Rani had to lose weight for her character in the movie she turned to fitness trainer Satya. She was very demanding and serious about losing weight. As a result, Satya was always under pressure. Even Rani’s dress designer for the movie Surily Goel had a hard time putting up with Rani Mukherjee’s demands. To get the right look Ranee Mukherjee even worked with Surily.
