Until now, drug abuse never made media headlines in Maldives. However, things are changing rapidly in this regard. Drug abuse is becoming a big problem for the people. Maldives has a population of just over 300,000 and that is why even a few thousand people get addicted then it will affect the country in a very bad way. Young people are getting addicted to drugs more.
AFP reported:
Around 20 percent of the island nation's residents under the age of 15 are using banned substances, according to the National Narcotics Control Bureau.
Bored and restless, youngsters, who comprise more than 40 percent of the population of 300,000, are increasingly turning to drugs, health workers say.
This is an alarming situation and the government of Maldives should be more serious about it. In South Asia, Maldives is the richest country. So, its government can afford to allocate some more funds to ensure that young people can be busy with creative and healthy activities.
