Maldives: What is the Future?
Indian Ocean archipelago Maldives is vulnerable to sink in the sea by 2100 if the global climate change continues at the present rate. Maldives president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has recently called for help from the global community on this regard. He also said that tourism and fishing are the main source of their economy. However, natural disasters have made a huge lose in their tourism sector. So, it is, for sure, global help is now badly needed for this small island country.

Reuters reported:
"Three-quarters of our 1,200 islands lie no higher than four feet above mean sea-level. The projected rise in sea-levels by the end of this century could mean that our islands may become uninhabitable at that time." "All these effects compound our concern as our narrow-based economy is dependent on fisheries and tourism. Both sectors face a real danger of collapse if current trends continue during the coming decades." Tourism is the lynchpin of the Maldives' $700 million economy.
The country has 1,200 islands of which three quarters are maximum 4 feet high from the sea level. In global warming, the developed countries are contributing much more than the developing and underdeveloped countries. Because of luxurious life style of the people of the rich developed countries places like Maldives are under threat.

Maldives is a small country. In many ways, they are vulnerable at natural disaster because of its geographic location. I agree with you that global community should help Maldives in order to ensure the survival of the country.
