Indian car market is growing very rapidly and the leading auto makers are busy in a rat race to capture market share in India. Since India is not a rich country, auto makers have to focus on inexpensive models for the Indian market. We already know that TATA is trying to bring out the cheapest car in the world to the consumers for $2,000.
This June, I wrote that Nissan Renault was trying to make a $3,000 car in India. Now, it seems that the car will run in the Indian roads within the next 3-4 years.
Forbes reported:
Renault SA and Japanese affiliate Nissan Motor Co. are hoping to launch their planned 3,000 usd low-cost car in India in 2010, according to Carlos Ghosn, CEO of the two groups.
'If this car is feasible, which is still being studied, then we hope to launch it in 2010 in India,' Ghosn said during a news conference at the Tokyo car show.
'The big question is: will we be able to export it?,' he added, citing the European, Chinese, Brazilian and Mexican markets.
2010 seems to be an ambitious target for Nissan Renault. If Nissan Renault can achieve it then it will be quite impressive and it will be very popular among Indian consumers. However, I just like to catch your attention about two things. OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) project first stated that the price of their laptop will be $100 but later we saw that it may be $188. I hope the same does not happen for $3,000 car from Nissan Renault.
The second thing I like to state here is that India recently joined 200 million mobile phone user base club. It has only happened because mobile phone companies like Nokia and others could offer cheap mobile phone sets in Indian market. The same thing can happen for cars in India if automakers can come up with cheap cars.
