Mughal-E-Azam is based on the legendary love story of Prince Salim, also known as Emperor Jahangir and Anarkali, a slave girl and a court dancer. According to famous legend, Anarkali was buried alive but in the movie, Mughal-E-Azam, it was shown that Akbar spared Anarkali’s life and let her go away. The story of the movie was adapted from a famous stageplay titled “Anarkali.” Before Mughal-E-Azam, in 1953, another film was made titled “Anarkali.” Bina Rai played the central character.

I got different information from different websites regarding the time length of the making of the movie. Somewhere it is said ten years and some where it is said that the making of Mughal-E-Azam took more than ten years. In an interview with rediff.com, Dilip Kumar mentioned that the film took more than ten years to make.

The movie was shot three times to dub in three different languages: Tamil, Hindi and English. The English version of the movie is not available any more. The Tamil version did not do well.

To recreate the Mughal grandeur on screen, tailors were brought from Delhi, specialists from Surat-Khambayat were brought to do the embroidery work, goldsmiths from Hyderabad designed the jewelry, Kohalpur craftsmen designed the crowns, Rajasthan ironsmiths made the weapons, and the exclusive shoes were ordered from Agra.

The statue of Lord Krishna used in the movie was made of pure gold.

For shooting the battle scenes of Mughal-E-Azam, 2000 camels, 4000 horses and 8000 troops were used. The soldiers came from the Jaipur Regiment. For the soldiers, the movie makers had to take permission from the Defense ministry.

It took Rs. 15 million to make Mughal-E-Azam and more than 500 working days. Till now, it is one of the costliest movies made in Bollywood.

The movie won Filmfare Award in three categories: Best Cinematography,Best Dialogue Writer, and Best Film.
