Mughal-E-Azam: sequel of Jodhaa Akbar (4)

The music of the movie was composed by Naushad, one of the famous musicians of Indian cinema. Naushad said that he recorded 15 to 20 songs for the movie  but not all of them were used.

For the song, “Ae Mohabbat Zindabad,” Mohammad Rafi sang with a chorus of 100 singers.

To the fans of Mughal-E-Azam, the movie is synonymous with the song “Pyar Kiya to Darna Kiya.” It cost Rs. 1.5 million to shoot the song (In those days, the cost of making a movie was less than a million). Lyricist Shakeel Badayuni had to re-write the lyrics 105 times before Naushad could approve it. Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad worked all night in Naushad’s bungalow terrace for this song.

Famous Indian singer, Lata Mangeshkar sang “Pyar Kya to Darna kya.” For creating reverberation of sound Naushad advised Lata Mangeshkar to sing the song in the bathroom of the studio. “Pyar Kiya to Darna Kiya” is one of the all time famous songs of Indian cinema.

“Pyar Kiya to Darna Kiya” was shot in Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors). The bangle artists from Firozabad recreated the famous Sheesh Mahal which cost 700,000 rupees. The entire placae occupied 1000 square meter. Unfortunately, shooting the song became very difficult in Sheesh Mahal because of the reflection of light in the mirrors. K.Asif then decided to raze Sheesh Mahal down. He went to Hollywood cinematographer David Lean and he replied that it was impossible. Then he went on and shot the song in black and white and colored version. The producer of the movie was so much impressed with the colored version that he requested Asif to give him the song. He would be able to collect Rs. 10 million.

In Jodhaa Akbar, Nitin Desai also created an artificial Sheesh Mahal using 2 million mirror pieces. Nitin was aware of the problem K. Asif faced while shooting the song in Sheesh Mahal and he designed it in such a way that Ashutosh did not have to face the same problem. To build the Sheesh Mahal, Nitin had to work 12 -18 hours a day.

Miah Tansen, the famous classical singer, was one of the nine talented personalities in the court of Emperor Akbar. In Mughal-E-Azam, famous Hindustani classical singer, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, sang two songs (Prem Jogan Ban Ke, Shubh din aayo) for the voice of Tansen. For singing the songs he charged Rs. 25000 per song. This was the highest amount of money paid to any play back singer at that time. Mohammad Rafi and Lata Mangeshkar, two of the top singers of the time were paid Rs. 300-400 per song.
