Nepal: Growing Business of Sex Selection

Killing female fetuses is indeed a big business in India. In fact, nearly 10 million female fetuses have been destroyed in India in the last two decade. Until now, this was not an important issue in Nepal. However, things are changing and the business of sex selection is becoming a growing one in Nepal these days. According to an The UNFPA (the United Nations Population Fund) study, the condition has not reached alarming stage at this moment in Nepal but the future does not look very promising.

Nepal Monitor reported:

Women from the Tarai have relatively easy access to sex-determination clinics in Indian border towns. The study showed that 57 per cent of married women are aware of prenatal sex-determination technologies, and know where to obtain such services. One-fifth of the women who ever had pre-natal sex-determination tests had visited India to do so. The study identified 72 clinics located in 10 border towns and cities along the three studied border

routes in India that provide sex-selection services to Nepalese women.

Key conclusions

• Sex selection is not a major concern now; however, it is likely that demand could increase in future due to son preference and availability of technology;

• Proximity to India has impacted knowledge of and access to sex-selection services

I wish that Nepalese government pays due attention to this matter right now or else it may be a big problem indeed for the country in the next 10 years.

By the way, in some parts of India, renting wife is becoming a good business as the number of female babies is decreasing compared to male children. I hope that the same thing does not happen in Nepal.

female are still suffering in this 21st century. this news really hurt me. i don't know how people can do like this type of stupid work. i think nepal government should take some steps about it other wise many female fetuses can be destroyed. if it does then obviously it will be a bad work and government can't take any steps.
