Pakistan, Child Labor and Western Consumers

Jonathan Silvers has written an article titled Child Labor in Pakistan in The Atlantic. There, he has talked about the miserable condition of child labors in Pakistan. He has also depicted the helpless condition of the parents of these children. In fact, the parents are helpless because they are very poor and cannot afford to provide food for their children. So, they are forced to send their children to go to work at a very early age.

This is a reality found in most poor countries in the world. The poor parents are helpless but what about the western consumers. The western consumers are fond of cheap products. Cheap products come at a price and millions of child labor pay that price around the world not only just in Pakistan. For example, India has nearly 60 million child labors and there is little hope for them.

I just wish that western consumers were ready to pay some more money for the products coming from poor countries. This would help a lot to fight against child labor.

What do you think about this matter?

By the way, I think that the article that I talked about in this post was written in 1996.

this article hurt me deeply. It is really a sad news but western countries are taking benefit from this child labor. They are getting cheap product what are made by these little labors. if they start working from their childhood then they can't do anything when they will be adult. So, i think govenment of thrird world country should do anything for these child labor.

It is really very pathetic that Children are becoming the victim of poverty in Pakistan. It is obviously true that child labor is going on in most of the poor countries in the world. Children are the hope of the future and that is why they need to get education to become a wealth of the country. No doubt, the western companies are getting the advantage of it. So, I agree with you that western consumers should come forward to protect child labor.
