Gambling a Wife: The Next Big Business in India?

India is a very big country and Indian people often proudly say that whatever the world has, India has too. It seems that sometimes, India has some things that the rest of the world does not have. For example, recently, I saw this headline in Hindustan Times: Man gambles wife in Bihar village.

I am quoting from the report:

Umashankar Choudhary of Chaksaid village in Vaishali district gambled his wife, Sunanina Devi, to Manoj Singh of the same village.

"Umashankar gambled his wife when he lost his money, land, gold chain, motorcycle and even his watch in gambling," said Mahavir Pal, a local politician.

The incident occurred last week during Durga Puja festivities.

The victorious Singh demanded that Umashankar's wife be handed over to him.

Fortunately, the other villagers came forward and saved the wife from this humiliation. The village elders imposed a fine (Rs 5,000) on Umashankar Choudhary and asked him to pay the fine to victorious Singh. Thus, Singh did not get a woman but got some money instead. What is so shocking to me is that the village elders did not punish the two men who played with the honor of a woman.

This is a sad story and it indicates the miserable condition of Indian women in the rural areas. I wish that the Indian government comes forward to help women in the rural areas. Otherwise, gambling wife will become a big business in India like renting wife.

I am shocked to read the news. We can not assume that this kind of occurrence could happen in the modern civilization.

I am shocked to read the news. We can not assume that this kind of occurrence could happen in the modern civilization.

Yesterday I read one of your articles titled ‘Most Expensive Birthday Gift from Mukesh Ambani: A Private Jet of $59 Million Only’. Now I have read this one. It is really very shocking that both the incidents occurred in the same country. Actually, through this article you could bring out one of the instances of inhumane activities of rural India. There are many more problems in the village areas in India including dowry, child abusing etc.

I agree with you that both the persons should have been given exemplary punishment over the matter so that other gamblers could get a good lesion due to playing such gambling. This is the right time India government and other social organization should work together to save people from playing such gambling.

gambling is the worst for society. then some people are still playing gambling. And india is the best place for gambling. I think government should take some steps about it. other wise it can hamper the security system of any country.
