India: 33-year-old gets Married with a Dog Bride

Sometimes real life incidents go beyond our imagination. Something happens in reality that we can not even think off. Recently, such an incident occurred in Sivaganga district of Tamil Nadu. A man aged 33, married a female dog in order to get rid of a sin that he had done about 15 years ago. P. Selvakumar, a farm laborer by profession, has recently married a dog named Selvi according to Hindu marriage rituals.

The incident goes back to 15 years ago when Selvakumar was just 18. One day, Selvakumar killed a dog couple by stoning while they were mating and then hung on a tree. It has been reported that since then Selvakumar has been suffering from different physical ailments. At this moment his left arm and legs are paralyzed and he can not hear in one of his ear. He believes that because of killing tow dogs he is still bearing the sin and now marrying a dog he wants to get rid of it.

Telegraph reported:

He was reported to have suffered a series of physical ailments after stoning the dogs to death and hanging their bodies from a tree.

“After that my legs and hands got paralysed and I lost hearing in one ear,” said Mr Selvakumar after the ceremony with his new "bride", whose name is Selvi.

The marriage ceremony was held at a Ganesh temple with all the formalities of a human marriage. Dressed in orange sari and garlanded with flowers, the bride, Selvi reached at the temple with a bridal procession. In the presence of about 200 relatives of Groom, the marriage ceremony was completed.

Times of India reported:

Selva Kumar tied a 'mangal sutra' on the animal, petnamed Selvi, at a Ganesh temple in Manamadurai on Sunday. The 10-year-old saree-clad "bride" was brought to the temple in a grand procession. Kumar, who vowed to protect Selvi all through its life, said he married the animal as per the advice of an astrologer.

According to some reports the dog is aged four whereas some reported the dog is about 10 years old. During the marriage ceremony, the dog ran away then the groom relatives brought it back to her husband. After the ceremony the guest feasted and the dog was given a bun.

Short News reported:

Weddings to dogs and other animals are arranged in rural areas by superstitious people who believe that certain curses can be warded off by such actions. After the ceremony, the groom and his family feasted, while the bride dined on a bun.

Selva Kumar admitted that he got the advice to marry a female dog from an astrologer. Astrologer told him that marrying a female dog was the only way to atone for his sin. He also said that he would take care of his bride till his death.

Dogflu reported:

The dog is 10-years-old and was brought to the temple with a bridal procession and all.

Kumar stated that "I will take care of it till its death."

He stated an astrologer told him to marry a female dog to rid of the curse, so he did.

According to Hindu religion there are some animal creatures that they worship and symbolize to God. At this moment, Diwali festival, the biggest religious festival of Hindu religion in the country, is going on in India. In the second day of this five day long festival, some Hindus worship the dogs.

Hostel Bookers reported:

Hinduism has a tradition of deep held respect for certain animals, because they believe them to be representations of gods. Most notably, cows are revered.

The five-day festival of Tihar or Dipawali sees Hindus worship the dogs on day two - Kukar Tihar. This festival will no doubt become an important family event for the recently wed couple.

No doubt, it is hard to believe that such incident is still going on in today’s world. India as a country has developed a lot in terms of its economy, business etc. However, many people in rural India are yet to get the light of modern world. Government along with people from all walks of life can play certain role in removing such darkness from rural areas in the country.
