To make the movie short, Ashutosh had to cut off two songs one of which was a qawwali sung by A.R. Rehman, the music composer of Jodhaa Akbar. Apun Ka Choice reports:
According to a source, every scene in the movie is important, and Gowarikar did not want the flow to suffer. Therefore, the lavishly shot songs had to go.
"It was a very good idea to have a qawwali, as it was a traditional aspect in the lives of kings. It was difficult for Ashutosh, but he also asked for Rahman's take on the decision, and chopped the songs off only when Rahman agreed," the source adds.
Before deducting the two songs, Ashutosh had taken A.R. Rahman’s consent. Please do not be disappointed. The two songs will appear in the movie DVD.
Ashutosh Gowariker’s previous movies: Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India and Swades were also lengthy. Lagaan was almost four hours and Swades is three and half hours long.
My guess is that Jodhaa Akbar was a four hour long movie in the first place. After deducting the two songs the running time has come down to three and half hours. The colorized version of Mughal-E-Azam, the sequel of Jodhaa Akbar, is also three hours long and to make it three hours, four songs ("Mohabbat ki jhoothi kahani pe roye", "Beqas be karam kijiye", "Ae ishq yeh sab duniyawale" and "Humein kash tumse mohabbat na hoti") were deducted.
