Mughal-E-Azam: sequel of Jodhaa Akbar (6)

At the initial stage, director K. Asif did not consider Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, and Prithviraj Kapoor for the characters of Salim, Anarkali and Akbar. His choices were Sapru, Nargis, and Chandramohan.

The shooting of the movie started with Chandramohan, Nargis and Sapru in 1944. After shooting 7-8 reels, the filming came to a hault with the death of Chandramohan in 1946. Producer Siraj Ali and many of the actors and actresses moved to Pakistan after the partition. Nargis could not continue her work in the movie because of her contract with R.K. Studio. The shooting again started in 1951 with the new cast.

Initially, R.D. Mathur took Dilip Kumar’s screen test but K. Asif rejected it. After getting the role, Dilip Kumar was sent to London for designing his wig in the movie.

In his life time, K. Asif completed only two movies: Mughal-E-Azam and Phool.

Dilip Kumar wanted his name in the top bill of the movie title. However, K.Asif did not agree with him. He told him that the movie had been shot from Akbar’s point of view. So, Prithviraj Kapoor’s name was shown in top billing.

Surinder Kapoor worked as an assistant director in Mughal-E-Azam. When the movie started, he was a bachelor then. By the time the movie was completed, he got married and became father of three children: Anil Kapoor, Boney Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor. Presently, Anil Kapoor is one of the top Bollywood actors, Boney Kapoor is a successful producer and director and Sanjay Kapoor became an actor.

It took more than ten months to decorate the Mughal Darbar. One hundred fifty decorators, carpenters and painters were employed to do the job.

In one of the scenes, Akbar storms in Prince Salim’s chamber and becomes furious when he sees Salim and Anarkali together. Helpless Anarkali melts into Salim’s arm in fear and tears out the pearl necklace in his neck. The pearls were real rice pearls.
