Om Shanti Om Review: From Different Websites

What can be said about Om Shanti Om? In simple words “No logic only Shah Rukh’s magic.” (I got the idea of this title from Rediff). The movie deals with an unnatural subject; so, do not try to look for serious issues. It is a movie with lots of glitz and glamours and if you watch Hindi movies then you will love it.

The story movie takes off from the 70’s. It depicts the famous movie stars and makes fun with their trademark acting styles. The first half tells the story of a junior artist named Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan) falling in love with the famous actress of the time Shanti. Before their love could flourish they died. From the 70’s, the story comes into 2007. Om prakash Makhija is reincarnated as a famous star, Om Kapoor and Shanti as Sandy. Om then goes on and reveals the truth behind his and Shanti’s death.

Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om

This movie is made in similar style of the 2004 block buster, Main Hoon Na. It is a total entertainer and in the moment of Diwali this is what people just crave for. Om Shanti Om has been released in 2000 screens around the world. National Post dubbed Om Shanti Om an “Spectacle” an “Epic movie.”

From a dance sequence that incorporates a badminton match, Bollywood tributes to spaghetti westerns and superhero films, or the extravagant sets (credit to art director Sabu Cyril) that evoke Golden Age Hollywood, you may find yourself rubbing your eyes, incredulous to what you're seeing on screen. For those unused to Bollywood, Om Shanti Om may be overwhelming.

According to the review, the movie is not good for its story or script but mixture of comedy, drama, romance, action and supernatural.

On the other hand, Indicine just lambasted Om Shanti Om. As an entertainer, the movie is a total disappointement.

Technically Om Shanti Om is good, but as an entertainer, a major disappointment. The fact that it is such a terrible let down, is yet to sink in. What was Farah Khan (director) thinking? How could she make such a bad film, after directing a decent entertainer in Main Hoon Na? What was Shahrukh Khan thinking when he approved the script? How could almost everything go so wrong in a movie?

The movie has major flaws. Both the first half and the second have a lot of similarities, a few scenes actually are repeated! So if you miss the first half or you decide to walk out during the interval, dont worry, you haven’t missed much. The biggest flaw is you never feel for any of the characters, you laugh when the characters cry and vice versa. The transformation of Om Kapoor to Om Prakash in the second half, isnt handled well and is far from convincing. The transformation part is so very important in reincarnation movies, something which was handled brilliantly in Karan Arjun. The death scene, rebirth, flashbacks - needs expert direction, Farah unfortunately fails.

Rediff has published three reviews of Om Shanti Om. Om Shanti Om is a big movie which is in love with itself.

Om Shanti Om is an exultant, heady, joyous film reveling in Bollywood, and as at most parties where the bubbly flows free, there is much silly giggling and tremendous immaturity. You'd do well do breathe in the filmi fumes, lift your own collar-tips upwards, and leave sense out of the equation. More cameos are written in than dialogues, so sit back and play spot-the-celeb. Or watch the Khan have a blast on screen.

Make that the Khans. The King is all super and funny and awesomely sixpacked, but Queen Farah is one to be toasted, just for her sheer bindaas enthu. No gag is too obvious, no plotpoint too ludicrous and no cliche too overused -- in fact, the more overused the better, decides she. And if the result of her damn-the-detractors attitude is a magnificent scene with Shah Rukh wrestling a stuffed tiger and using all kinds of pussycat phrases with a thick Tamil accent, I say hats off.

The movie is a tribute to Bollywood. It will make people nostalgic. One of best moments of the movie was the award giving ceremony. Akshay Kumar did a cameo role but his performance was very good. Deepika Padukone did not have much scope to show her acting talents but she has played her part very well. Arjun Rampal effortlessly fits into the character of the villain; however, the villains in Farah’s movies are not so strong and serious.

Variety lables Om Shanti Om “Masala to the max.” It further says,

Pic is really two movies in one, with part one a jokey tribute to the '70s and part two much more plot-heavy and dramatic. With the hunky Khan onscreen almost the whole time, and seriously overdoing his mature-boyish charm in the first half, the movie also requires considerable tolerance of the King's limited range. Padukone, a real looker with major screen presence, acts as a balance in the early stages; more's the pity she's not given much chance in part two to develop her likeable, klutzy wannabe actress, Sandhya ("just call me Sandy").

Playing a villain for a change, Rampal is fine as the ruthless Mukesh, and Talpade, as Om's buddy, makes a good screen partner to Khan. Among the other thesps, Kher has the meatiest role as Om's mom.

Times Now.TV also praised Om Shanti Om. According to their report, movie goers prefer Om Shanti Om over Saawariya. With its lavishly decorated sets, catchy songs, and sensible mixture of overacting with comedy, romance and drama, Om Shanti Om is a total paisa vasool movie. Unfortunately, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya do not have that energy.

Deepika Padukone in Om Shanti Om

According to The Asian News Om Shanti Om is a magical movie which has everything Hindi movie goers look for in an entertaining movie.

The movie dazzles you throughout with its gripping story line. My first thought at watching the trailers was that it was going to be a remake of Hollywood B movie called Chances Are but it was far from it.

The comedy is also done very well, with the director Farah Khan poking some fun at the industry but not criticising it. If anything, she tries to show what it is that we all love about the industry and that is its over the top entertainment.

Khan has always been great at comedies and his character is charming and lovable.

According to Apun Ka Choice, Farha Khan’s Om Shanti Om perfectly matches the festive spirit of Diwali.

The best part about OSO is that it doesn’t pretend to be cerebral. Its humour, its corny sentimentality, and its music combine together to make a perfect recipe to drive your blues away.

On top of it are superb performances by the starcast helmed by the endearing Shah Rukh Khan who does the most corny things with such conviction that you end up liking them. Be it dressing like Rajnikant in the cowboy ‘Murugan’ avatar and fighting with a fluffy tiger. Or rescuing his ladylove from a raging fire and getting scorched above his butt.

In this movie Shah Rukh Khan even cracks jokes about himself. For example, “over acting to mere khandan me hi hai.”

Last but not the least, the finishing touch of the movie was truly exceptional. All the cast and crews of the movie took part in the song “Om Shanti Om” along with 30 movie stars. Normally, when the film ends the names of the crew appears in small fonts making people wander who are they. Om Shanti Om may not have a strong story but it keeps the energy flowing till the end. Three cheers for Farah and Shah Rukh. Once again they have rocked the audience.

I am also waiting to watch Om Shanti Om. It is nice that the movie has got positive response in the box office. However, I do not if movie fans changes their mind in the days to come. I think, Shah Rukh Khan has again proved his worth and Deepika Padukone is going to become the next superstar in Bollywood. Farah Khan, no doubt, has becomes successful with her second movie as well.

i am also a great fan of hindi movie. I am eagerly waiting to see 'Om Shanti Om' and 'Saawariya'. Thanks for this entry. Now, was doubt about which one i will see first. but after reading your entry, i am thinking that i will see Om Shanti Om first. Thanks again. i am also ur fan. when i get time, i read ur article. you can make article nice.

Please dont watch the movie.....

its 100% pathetic movie !!!!1

a real B grade movie.....

the movie is senseless mindless no plot omg i wasted 150 bucks on this piece of crap

Om shati om has been hyped too much but the movie is not worth it. It is a very silly movie with no story. Sharukh is ok but deepika looks stunning and acts well. Can just be called a time pass film, nothing really great about it. thanks

A stunningly visual feast! Heart warming Music and watching Shahrukh dancing with so many beautiful bollywood divas is worth every penny and every minute. Thanks Farah.

A stunningly visual feast! Heart warming Music and watching Shahrukh dancing with so many beautiful bollywood divas is worth every penny and every minute. Thanks Farah.

pathetic movie. how can the indian audience put up with such crap..
farah khan uve done a good job of making a fool of the indian public.
Overacting written all over the movie.
Senseless crap.
My advice to people is please get some maturity and watch movies wit a little more sense.
and stop praising such stupid movies.
Cant wait for aamirs "taare zameen par".
Hope atleast tht movie would have some sense...

Om Shanti Om is a big disappointment....Agree with Bela... Farah has made a fool of the Indian audience by creating so much undue hype around this movie....the 31 filmstars..Sharukhs six-pack... but the movie just doesnt live up at all.. I am surprised how Sharukh accepted the script, the only reason I see is coz Farah is his good friend.

I'm an ardent lover of masala movies, but this doesnt go even half a yard of what u wud expect from a Sharukh movie... The movie is lucky to click at the Box office thanks to the deceptive promos.. For ppl who still want to watch this movie, dont go by the fact that its a hit...the movie is just a lucky accident for Farah & Sharukh.. Watch it only as a timepass..

i m just waiting for her upcoming films 'main bhi hoon naa', 'phir bhi dil hai nri' and ofcourse 'mind it' Cut it, its a SUPERHIT!

A sheer non sense movie !! What does Fara or SRK think about themselves ?? They just thought they could simply sell good SRK's stardom by making us all fool!! The movie is much like a film award night !! I bet, it gonna fell after the initial pull.

The bollywood movie has got a serious publicity in the media. All cinema audiences thought that would get more popularity but after reading some of the readers’ comments I astonished. Some are parsing it but most are disliked it. Om Shanti Om is has not any good story and it’s a time pass movie.
My opinion is that as Deepika is a new actress so all should inspire her so that she can sustain her acting career.

OSO is a true dissapointment. With all the hype surrounding it, it doesnt live up to the expectations at all..!!!
Surprising how Farah can direct such a bad movie after main hoon na!'
Hardly a proper story line..full time over acting..too many songs popping in n out widout notice...
i wud not even call it an illogical entertainer... it neither has logic nor does it provide any entertainmnet.
jus watch for time pass...

I am definately sure, SRK-Farah paid some money to those news papers to praise the movie...Such a horrible movie. Never could figure out if it was a comedy movie or a serious movie..when to laugh and when to be sad?
if its a movie of 'comedy on indian movies' 'punarjanma' or 'bhoot pret'. If it was comedy David Dhawan would have done it better. 'punarjana' - karz was much strong theme. If 'bhoot pret' Ramsay would have done it better.

Timepass movie. 70s recreation in the 1st half is entertaining. It's like the 70s we see in old films come to life though in an exaggerated and comic way. First half of the second half is mostly Shahrukh's buffoonery but the last 30 minutes tug at once's heart.

Deepika Padukone, what to say, she is really a dream girl. For a newcomer from the modelling world she acts fairly good. And while dancing and in general her expressions are perfect. In the last scene she's very intense. She's here to stay folks.

Shah rukh has done a good movie after a long time after a series of horrible horrible movies like main hooon na, kal ho na ho..eeks..he has finally showed that he has some talent. Its because of people above, who didnt like the movie, Ekta Kapoor is such a big hit in India.
This movie is a very good spoof of bollywood.

Simply put OSO was a collosal disappointment, all hype no substance, just the use of star power to make money, from now on all SRK and Farah khan movies for me will be left to wtch on DVD's only.

It is just the same old karz(blockbuster) movie with some cinema background. It is an below average movie that's all........

The very first 15 minutes of the movie (b4 shahrukh dies )is really superb.Later the graph simply drops. Plz PLZ n PLZ dont even think of WASTING ur time seein it.Instead donate half of the ticket value. Maybe to the Bangladeshi cyclone victims. You will atleast feel good.
I agree with friends that its a mockery of Indian audiences. I just cant imagine how ppl in other parts of the world would think of BOLLYWOOD and above all about the POWERFUL Indian Media who is simply making a hype about the movie.

Thumbs DOWN SRK & Farah & last but not the least so the called "Powerful Indian Media" .

any one who says that OSO is worst movie he is the largest gando of now a days.i think it is a good movie in which there is roomance action suspense.its better than dhoom etc etc etc.i really liked this movie.

Fishhhhhhhhhhhhh.........worst movies ever seen... what the tell...what do they think of indian audience and more importantly abt the film industry ....they have no respect for anyone ....this is self praise at its best...its total crap...

total crap, absolutely no logic.. and there was no chemistry between Padukone and Sharukh (bollywood films generally have no plot but the hero heroine chemistry and music makes up for it) there was neither good music nor good chemistry. If OSO is a hit its only because of the promos. Farash Khan's "repeat value" claim for the song OSO was just... false
Whatever little respect stars such as abhishek bacchan and even shabana azmi had.. OMG! they lost, by ripping themselves off in the red carpet scene - OFF PUTTING TOTALLY
And Manoj Kumar finally - Dont understand how he could be offended by a ridiculous film trying to ridicucle him- must have been paid i guess....

whatever little respect i had for Farah and Shahrukh because of main hoon na- i have lost. But i hope it has enlightened the public about Shahrukh's llimited acting skills, vishal shekhar's deterioration in making music, and about what an idiot farah khan is. I do appreciate Kirron Kher's performance the entire time that she appeared. If there were any touching moments during this film, it was only because of her - Prrrobably the last scene as well Padukone gets her act together.
Overall : im personally requesting 'all of you all' (like they all say in our bollywood) NOT TO WATCH IT!

OMO is a very nice movie after long time. It is a farah khan's next magic. Shahrukh is mind blowing. If you are SRK's fan then you will like it very much. It is going to become a big hit of 2007.

OMG......OMG.... What a waste of time and money......please dont go to see it even if u get a free ticket..... plzzz dont watch it... hopeless hai .

Om Shanti Om - was not that bad, - at least we had a few laughs , The killer movie was that Saawariya ( what was the director thinking) - was it a play or a movie, did that part of the world ever see the sun, Oh my God, lets not leave out the songs,.. I could have pulled out my hair, oh and what was Salmans role in the whole thing, where did he come from , where the hell did he go to and where was the romance ??? did I miss it - wey bad movie.

Excellent again

The most 'Ghatya' film i ve ever seen atleat of shahrukh khan . It was a real big dissapointment ..... allnewspaper saying allthat good stuff are really lying ... i dont think anyone can like this crap

Wow nice movie …I love it ….not only because of shahrukh because of all the characters was perfect. The main reason I love it because srk touched the fans heart by acting as fan in the movie…. who expressed exactly as we do for him hehe. Of course with his abbs, attitude… my mouth dropped I was shocked…breatheless hot…. GOOD JOB BRO U ALWAYS ROCK…..please do more of action roles with charming, hot, stubborn style u look nice…luv luv yo muah..hugs ..take care....
