South Asian News: Updates for 20 November 2007

Harvard University is going to initiate extensive researches on South Asia and will focus on South Asia related project. The university also aims to increase the number of researchers, scholars and students from South Asian region.

Asian Development Bank (ADB) will lend $2 million to India for increasing cooperation in infrastructure development between public and private sectors. A report shows that Mobile Communications and Mobile Data markets in eight South Asian countries have seen extensive growth in 2007.

Umpire Rudi Koertzen apologized to Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara for giving him out when he was just 8 runs away from his double century. With this wrong decision, Sri Lanka also lost their last hope to save the Hobart test against Australia. Former Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu has declared his retirement from international cricket. So, the Hobart test has been his last test appearance for Sri Lanka.

Gitanjali Gems Ltd., an Indian jewelry firm, has recently bought an US based Jewelry store chain Rogers Ltd. Chief of London Olympic Games 2012, Sebastian Coe has said that London will help India to organize 2010 Commonwealth games. Indian auto manufacturer Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. along with Apollo Management LP is bidding to achieve Ford Motor Co.'s Jaguar and Land Rover technology to enhance the product line-up of the Indian company.

 

Ahead of the first test starting from 22 November, Pakistan has recently said that they are ready to tackle Anil Kumble. Kimble will lead India for the first time in Test cricket in this series.  About 2.6 million Nepali children aged 5-14 are now involved in different kinds of child labor. Moreover, 13,000 children in Nepal die every year because of health problems caused by contaminated water.

The number of death due to Cyclone Sidr has passed 3100. Bangladesh Red Crescent Society has said that the number may reach at 10000. Foreign aids are coming to Bangladesh to help the victims of cyclone.
