Indian economy is growing and the demand for electricity is increasing a lot. If India wants to sustain high economic growth then India has to arrange more electricity. The ever increasing price of oil does not bring any comfort to the Indian decision makers. So, they have to think of alternatives. Hydropower can be a good alternative in this regard.

India is already importing some hydroelectricity from neighboring Bhutan. There is possibility of increasing the electricity from Bhutan. Nepal holds even a bigger potential when it comes to hydropower. However, political instability in Nepal is a big obstacle in this regard. Well, things have improved some in Nepal now. So, Indian decision makers should explore this matter more.

India may have to invest a lot of money at first for getting hydroelectricity from Nepal and Bhutan. However, considering the price of oil in the international market, hydropower may be a viable source alternative in the long run.
