Maldives is a small country with a small population. It is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the world. Things are not going great for the country in the recent years. I wrote about drug problem in the country. A large number of prisoners are drug addicted and this is a big problem for everyone. Unfortunately, the government treats them as prisoners but not as patients and this is creating a problem in the country.

The Government promised treatment for drug offenders would “start immediately,” following an assessment by the National Narcotics Control Bureau.

The Prisons department now say treatment will begin at the end of 2008.

The Government did “immediately” implement a commitment to stop opening inmates’ letters and restore family visits, while the Human Rights Commission has been allowed to investigate Muslih Abbas’ death.

A rehabilitation programme promised with a month, has been started with a token intake. But only fifty inmates have access to it, meaning jail remains purely punitive for the vast majority of Maldivian prisoners.

This is a sad picture indeed. Well, Maldives government should become more concerned about the plight of the ordinary people. Child labor is also becoming a problem in the country.
