Nepal: A farewell to King Gyanendra?

When I started blogging in March 2006, King Gyanendra was the most powerful man in the country. There was a popular movement to restore democracy and the King had to give in. Parliament was restored. There was a demand for turning Nepal in to a republic by abolishing monarchy. Now, all the major political parties have agreed to do so and monarchy will be abolished very soon.

Times Online wrote:

King Gyanendra of Nepal was stripped of his powers last night after the country's provisional parliament voted to abolish the 239-year-old monarchy

He will remain in his palace until early next year, when the decision will be rubber-stamped by a newly elected assembly that will establish Nepal as a democratic federal republic.

After that the King will be forced to move to his private residence to live as a private citizen — the culmination of six years of self-destruction by the Nepalese monarchy.

King Gyanendra was never popular but he managed to get the supports of influential groups in Nepal. That is why; he managed to hold on to power until now. Another matter is the opposition parties could never become united. They are still not united but they have reached to a common decision about the abolishment of monarchy.

What next for Nepal?

This is the outcome of his continuous oppression and misuse of power. So, if there is anybody who King Gyanendra can blame for then the person is no one but himself. After a tragic incident of Nepal’s king family, he came into the throne. Nepalese people were not unhappy with the monarchy that time. However, King Gyanendra gradually made people think differently regarding the monarchy and at last it was end of the King’s supremacy last year. Now, the century long monarchy is now at stake.
